Mayo Clinic Health System is working with groups and individuals in and around the Fairmont area to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment. The goal of the process is to identify, prioritize and address health resources and needs with community partners.

“The overall health of the community cannot be address by one entity or organization,” says Bob Bartingale, administrator at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont. “The process we’re using to conduct the Health Needs Assessment is very inclusive – involving residents, community leaders, business leaders and others who have a stake in the health and well-being of our area.”

The Community Health Needs Assessment process includes forming an advisory committee that will help gather data, list priorities and determine implementation strategies. Surveys will be used to collect information ranging from the current availability of health care services, satisfaction with those services and the need or desire for additional services in the area. Once the data is collected, the advisory committee will help develop action plans to address health priorities for the future.

“Health care is in a constant state of change,” says Greg Kutcher, M.D., president and CEO of Mayo Clinic Health System in the region. “In order to keep the needs of the patients first, we need to change the way we deliver care – to make it more efficient, more affordable and less costly. The best way to do that is to involve patients and other stakeholders in our decision-making process.”

Mayo Clinic Health System is conducting Community Health Needs Assessments in each of the communities in which it has a hospital over the next several months. Results will be compiled and reported to the Federal government as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.
