THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD AT THEIR MEETING TUESDAY FIRST HEARD FROM COUNTY ATTORNEY TERRY VIELSSELMAN ABOUT A LOOMING PROBLEM WITH JAIL SPACE AND MORE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS POLICY REVISIONS REGARDING PENALTIES FOR METH CRIMES. THE STATE SAYS LOWERING SOME CRIMES FROM FELONIES WITH PRISON TIME ATTACHED TO GROSS MISDEMEANORS REQUIRING TIME IN COUNTY JAILS HAS BURDENED OUTSTATE MINNESOTA. VIESSELMAN WENT ON TO SAY THAT ANYBODY THAT BREAKS PROBATION GUIDELINES GOES BACK TO COUNTY JAIL FOR UP TO A YEAR TAKING UP SPACE AND ADDITIONAL COUNTY COSTS. HE ADDED THAT D. O. C. POLICY NOW STATES THAT SOME FIRST TIME FELONS FOR ANY CRIME NOW ARE BEING RECOMMENDED FOR JAIL TIME INSTEAD OF BEING IN PRISON. VIESSLEMAN SAID HE WILL CONTINUE TO HAVE MORE DISCUSSION WITH CORRECTIONS WITH HOPES ON LIMITING THE NUMBER OF CASES WHERE THE STATE IS TRYING TO CUT THEIR COSTS BY BURDENING COUNTY JAILS AND BUDGETS. ALSO FOR THE COUNTY ATTORNEY THE BOARD VOTED TO SIGN A RETAINER AGREEMENT FOR LEGAL SERVICES PERTAINING TO A TAX APPEAL CASE AGAINST THE COUNTY.

COMMISSIONERS APPROVED A RESOLUTION DECLARING MARTIN COUNTY TO BE IN STATE OF EMERGENCY FROM CONDITONS RESULTING FROM THE EXPLOSION AND FIRE EVENT IN NORTHROP AT THE END OF DECEMBER.

THE BOARD APPROVED SIGNING A MODERNIZATION PROPOSAL FOR SECURITY BUILDING ELEVATOR REPLACEMENT WITH THYSSENKRUPP ELEVATOR CORPORATION IN THE PROJECT AMOUNT OF 124,017 DOLLARS.

MARTIN COUNTY ZONING OFFICIAL PAM FLITTER PRESENTED THE REVIEW OF 2017 BUILDING PERMITS ISSUED WHICH WAS 208 IN THE COUNTY. DIANE SANDERS ,MARTIN COUNTY RECORDER,PROVIDED AN UPDATE ON RECORDERS COMPLIANCE FUND AND OTHER VITAL STATISTICS FROM HER OFFICE. THE FUND IS SET UP TO COVER IF THE RECORDING PROCESS OF REAL ESTATE RECORD IS NOT CURRENT-THE RECORDER AND RELATED OFFICES IN THE PROCESS MUST CORRECT THE PROBLEM WITH THE AID OF THOSE FUNDS,DURING 2017 DIANE SAID THE DOCUMENT TURNAROUND TIMES FELL WITHIN THE TIME FRAME ALLOTED PER STATUTE.THAT FUND BALANCE IS $180,871 DOLLARS.

THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD APPROVED CHANGING THE REGULARLY SCHEDULED COMMISSIONERS MEETING TIME FROM 9 AM TO 4:30 PM ON TUESDAY JUNE 19,2018 IN ORDER TO DOVETAIL WITH THE COUNTY BOARD OF EQUALIZATION MEETING SET FOR 6:30 PM ON THAT DATE. THAT MEETING IS THE TIME TO QUESTION PROPERTY VALUATIONS FOR THIS YEAR.
