THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD TUESDAY DISCUSSED THE POSSIBILITY OF LOWERING THE SPEED LIMIT ON A PORTION OF COUNTY ROAD 26 JUST WEST OF THE INTERSECTION WITH BIXBY ROAD THROUGH THE FAIRMONT INDUSTRIAL PARK AREA. THERE IS NOT AN EXCESSIVELY HIGH NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS IN THAT AREA BUT SOME PEOPLE EXPRESSED SOME CONCERN ABOUT TRUCK TRAFFIC AND THE END OF SHIFT DURING THE AFTERNOON AT THE BUSINESS EXITS ON THAT STRETCH OF ROAD.

MARTIN COUNTY HIGHWAY ENGINEER KEVIN PEYMAN SAID THE PROCESS FOR CHANGING THE SPEED LIMIT RUNS THROUGH THE MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (MNDOT). HE SAYS THAT WILL REQUIRE A SPEED STUDY BEING CONDUCTED ON THAT STRETCH OF ROAD WHICH ENSURES THAT SPEED LIMITS WIL BE BASED ON ENGINEERS JUDGEMENTS AND NOT POLITICS. KEVIN PEYMAN OFFERED TO PREPARE A RESOLUTION TO REQUEST THE SPEED STUDY THAT HE WOULD HAVE AVAILABLE TO THE BOARD BY ITS NEXT REGULAR MEETING ON MAY 2ND.

COMMISSIONERS APPROVED A MOTION TO ENTER INTO A GRANT AGREEMENT WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF EMPLOYMENT AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT WHICH HAS AWARDED MARTIN COUNTY A BROADBAND DEVELOPMENT BORDER TO BORDER GRANT FOR THE RURAL BROADBAND INITIATIVE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FRONTIER COMMUNICATIONS.THE GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF 1.68 MILLION DOLLARS WAS AWARDED FOR THE PURPOSE OF ASSISTING BROADBAND PROVIDERS WITH ELIGIBLE INFRASTRUCTURE ACQUISITION AND INSTALLATION COSTS AND PROMOTE THE EXPANSION OF ACCESS TO BROADBAND SERVICE TO ALL AREAS OF THE STATE AND UNDERSERVED AND UNSERVED AREAS IN MARTIN COUNTY. THE GRANT PAYS 50 PER CENT OF THE COST WITH THE LOCAL MATCH OF 50 PER CENT PROVIDED BY FRONTIER COMMUNICATIONS.
