THE FAIRMONT PARK BOARD MET TUESDAY NIGHT. THE MONTHLY UPDATE WAS DISCUSSED WITH CITY PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR TROY NEMMERS INFORMING THE BOARD THAT SYLVANIA PARK SHELTER REPAIRS AND UPGRADES CONTINUE AND THAT THE CITY COUNCIL APPROVED THE 2017 IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM THAT INCLUDES PAVING OF THE PRAIRIE DOG PARKING LOT AND RESURFACING THE DAY FARM TRAIL FROM THE EXISTING BRIDGE NORTH TO THE PARKING LOT.

MR. NEMMERS ADDED THAT CITY STAFF IS WORKING ON A GRANT APPLICATION THROUGH THE D N R TO COMPLETE A 3,000 FOOT TRAIL LOOP WITHIN CEDAR CREEK PARK. THE PARK BOARD MEETING TURNED INTO A DISCUSSION ABOUT THE HALF-PERCENT LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX THAT WAS APPROVED BY FAIRMONT RESIDENTS LAST FALL BUT STILL MUST GAIN APPROVAL FROM THE STATE LEGISLATURE, AND THEN ACTIVATED BY THE CITY COUNCIL. THE PARK BOARD'S INTEREST IS FOR THE PORTION IF ANY OF THE EXPECTED 15 MILLION DOLLARS OVER IT'S 25 YEAR TERM WOULD GO TOWARD THE CITY'S TRAIL AND PARK SYSTEM. THE PROCESS WOULD LIKELY TAKE SEVERAL MONTHS BEFORE COLLECTION OF THE TAX WOULD BEGIN.
