THE FAIRMONT CITY COUNCIL HELD THEIR FINAL REGULAR MEETING OF 2016 ON MONDAY NIGHT. MAYOR BOB WALLACE , PRESIDING OVER HIS FINAL COUNCIL MEETING AS MAYOR, GOT HIS FIRST CHANCE TO CAST THE DECIDING VOTE ON A MOTION TO APPROVE A 9 PER CENT INCREASE IN THE CITY LEVY FOR 2017. COUNCILORS JIM ZARLING AND BRUCE PETERS VOTED FOR A 9 PER CENT LEVY INCREASE FOR 2017. COUNCILORS WES CLERC AND TERRY ANDERSON VOTED NO. COUNCILOR CHAD ASKELAND WAS NOT PRESENT. SO MAYOR WALLACECAST THE DECIDING YES VOTE.

THERE WAS SOME DISCUSSION AMONG THE COUNCILORS ON THE 9 PER CENT INCREASE WHICH WOULD INCLUDE 310,000 DOLLARS FROM THE LIQUOR STORE FUND AND A 7 PER CENT INCREASE WHICH WOULD REQUIRE 385,000 DOLLARS TRANSFERRED OUT OUT OF THE FUND. THE 334,000 DOLLAR- 9 PER CENT INCREASE IS EXPECTED TO HAVE A PROPERTY TAX IMPACT OF A 3.1 PER CENT INCREASE. THE TOTAL LEVY AMOUNT IS 4,049,030 DOLLARS

AFTER THAT 3-2 VOTE THE COUNCIL VOTED 3-1 IN FAVOR OF THE 2017 BUDGET WHICH SHOWS REVENUES OF 17,144, 548 DOLLARS AND EXPENDITURES 17,720,386 DOLLARS. THE COUNCIL VOTED 3-1 IN FAVOR OF THE PROPRIETARY FUND BUDGETS AS WELL. COUNCILOR TERRY ANDERSON VOTED NO IN ALL CASE BECAUSE HE THOUGHT NONE OF THE ACTIONS DIRECTED ENOUGH RESOURCES FOR SOLVING FLOODING PROBLEMS ON THE WEST AND EAST ENDS OF FAIRMONT.

MAYOR BOB WALLACE THANKED OUTGOING COUNCILORS WES CLERC,TERRY ANDERSON AND CHAD ASKELAND FOR THEIR WORK ON THE COUNCIL AT THE END OF THE MEETING..BOB WALLACE THANKED THE COUNCIL FOR CHOOSING HIM TO SERVE AS MAYOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS.

IN THE NEW YEAR DEB FOSTER WILL TAKE OVER AS THE NEWLY ELECTED MAYOR WITH NEW COUNCIL MEMBERS TOM HAWKINS,RUTH CYPHERS AND WAYNE HASEK.
