THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS HELD THEIR TRUTH IN TAXATION HEARING THURSDAY NIGHT. COUNTY AUDITOR TREASURER JIM FORSHEE EXPLAINED THE BUDGET AND PROPOSED LEVY DURING THE MEETING THAT SHOWS AN INCREASE OF 14 PERCENT TO THE BUDGET UP TO 26.3 MILLION DOLLARS WITH THE PROPERTY TAX LEVY UP 7.19 PERCENT TO 14.846 MILLION DOLLARS.

FOUR CONCERNED CITIZENS WERE AT THE HEARING AND TWO SPOKE UP ONE SAYING "THE COUNTY NEEDS TO CUT THE BUDGET AND SPENDING-FOR THOSE ON FIXED INCOMES IT GETS DIFFICULT TO KEEP PAYING HIGHER TAXES". A ONE PROPERTY OWNER QUESTIONED WHY HIS TAXES WENT UP 40 PERCENT LAST YEAR AND 18 PERCENT MORE THIS YEAR. MIKE SHEPLEE FROM THE MARTIN COUNTY ASSESSOR'S OFFICE GAVE A PRESENTATION ON HOW PROPERTY VALUATIONS ARE DETERMINED AND SAID IF ANYONE HAS QUESTIONS THEY CAN REQUEST A MEETING WITH THE ASSESSORS OFFICE TO GET AN EXPLANATION ABOUT THAT DETERMINATION FOR THAT PARTICULAR PROPERTY.

JIM FORSHEE GAVE AN EXPLANATION AS TO THE CAUSE OF THE INCREASES FOR NEXT YEAR. FOUR NEW FULL TIME POSITIONS AMOUNT TO 265,500 DOLLARS; CAPITAL PROJECT FUND FOR FUTURE IMPROVEMENTS 150,000; HEALTH INSURANCE INCREASE - 11,538 DOLLARS AFTER NEW EMPLOYEES ARE HIRED; SALARY/WAGES AND BENEFITS INCREASE-342,337 DOLLARS, INCREASE IN NEED FROM HUMAN SERVICES, MOSTLY OUT OF HOME PLACEMENTS 284,403 DOLLARS; INCREASE IN E D A FUND EXPENSES.

THE COMMISSIONERS WILL HAVE A FINAL CONSIDERATION OF THE PROPOSED TOTAL BUDGET AND PROPERTY TAXES AT THEIR NEXT MEETING ON DEC. 20.
