Local law enforcement say Pennsylvania authorities have identified a Minnesota man who formerly lived in Fairmont, who was arrested on charges that he killed a 76-year-old Pennsylvania woman a quarter-century ago.

Indiana County District Attorney Patrick Dougherty says the suspect is 61-year-old Charles Cook from Magnolia, Minnesota, a tiny town of roughly 200 people in southwest part of the state. According to local law enforcement-Cook had reportedly been the "panhandler" seeking funds in several locations in southern Minnesota including at the Goemann Road intersection with Highway 15 just north of Fairmont as well as New Ulm, Mankato and other locations and had been arrested earlier in Mankato.

Dougherty says the suspect fired two shots through a window that killed Myrtle McGill in the kitchen of her White Township Pensylvania home. Her body was found Dec. 13, 1991, but authorities believe she died several days before.

Authorities say her car was stolen but nothing else.

Police say Cook was convicted of crimes in 1998 and 1999 in Washington State and identified as a sex offender who was required to provide his DNA to the database. Police say his DNA matched DNA found on a cigarette butt recovered from the stolen vehicle.

Investigators say Cook was incarcerated in Pennsylvania from 1987 to 1991. He was then convicted of several crimes in Washington State and was extradited back to Pennsylvania in 2000, where he was paroled a second time in 2004.

Police say Cook was known to be “very transient” after his parole in 2004 and lived in dozens of locations in Ohio, Illinois, California, North Dakota and Minnesota including Fairmont according to local authorities.

Police say Cook will be extradited to Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
