THE FAIRMONT CITY COUNCIL MONDAY NIGHT DISCUSSED THE PROPOSED TRAIL CONNECTION BETWEEN CEDAR CREEK PARK AND KNOLLWOOD DRIVE. THE CITY HAS BEEN WORKING ON THAT FOR SEVERAL YEARS BUT HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO SECURE RIGHTS TO PRIVATE PROPERTY TO MAKE THE CONNECTION.

KENT BARKER, A FAMILY MEMBER OF THE PROPERTY OWNER, AND HEALTHY LIFE SPECIALIST AND AVID HIKER AND BIKER, QUESTIONS THE PROPOSED PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE THE CITY IS CURRENTLY CONTEMPLATING AND WHETHER ENOUGH HAS BEEN DONE TO FIND OUT RESIDENTS THOUGHTS ON THE PROJECT.

MR. BARKER PROVIDED AN OPEN LETTER HE HAD WRITTEN TO THE CITY AND SAID THE PLANS ESTIMATED COST AT 500,000 SHOULD BE FURTHER RESEARCHED BECAUSE IT REALLY DOES NOT CONNECT WITH ANYTHING LIKE SIDEWALKS OR BIKE LANES ON KNOLLWOOD.

COUNCILOR TERRY ANDERSON SAID IF THE CITY CANNOT GET PERMISSION FROM THE BARKERS THEY SHOULD SEEK ANOTHER ROUTE FOR A CONNECTING TRAIL. COUNCILOR WES CLERC SAID THE TRAIL DISCUSSION HAS GONE ON FOR 25 YEARS SUGGESTED THE CITY MAYBE NAME THE BRIDGE AFTER THE BARKER FAMILY TO GET AN AGREEMENT CITING THE FACT THAT WHAT IS NOW CEDAR CREEK PARK USED TO BE BARKER PARK WHEN THEY OWNED THAT PROPERTY.
