THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD TUESDAY HELD A WORK SESSION TO DISCUSS SEVERAL ITEMS . THE BOARD DISCUSSED A PROPOSED LEASE AGREEMENT FOR SPACE IN THE KRAHMER COURTHOUSE PLAZA OFFICE BUILDING FOR THE VETERANS SERVICE OFFICE. THE BOARD HAD APPROVED ENTERING INTO A ONE YEAR LEASE AGREEMENT WITH KRAHMERS AT THE LAST BOARD MEETING. THE KRAHMERS COUNTERED WITH A 5 YEAR LEASE ARRANGEMENT WHICH WOULD INCLUDE IMPROVEMENTS MADE TO THE OFFICE SPACE. THE BOARD IS EXPECTED TO DECIDE ON THAT AT THEIR NEXT MEETING THIS COMING TUESDAY SEPT. 6.

THE BOARD ALSO HELD A WORK SESSION ON A REVIEW OF THE PROPOSED PRELIMINARY 2017 BUDGET. THE BOARD HAD EARLIER HEARD ABOUT A BUDGET WITH PROJECTED LEVY INCREASE OF 7.22 PERCENT FOR THE COMING YEAR. COUNTY AUDITOR / TREASURER JIM FORSHEE AND ACCOUNTANT JESSICA KORTE HAD WHITTLED THAT DOWN TO ABOUT 5.5 PERCENT UNTIL HUMAN SERVICES CAME UP WITH A BUDGET REQUEST INCREASE OF 12 PERCENT INSTEAD OF THE 6 PERCENT THAT HAD BEEN TURNED IN EARLIER. THAT SENT THE PROJECTED LEVY INCREASE BACK TO THE 7.22 FIGURE. THE BOARD ALSO CONTEMPLATED PUTTING IN 80,000 DOLLARS OUT OF RESERVES TO PUT INTO BUILDING THE FUND BALANCE FOR HUMAN SERVICES BACK UP -BRINGING THAT LEVY INCREASE UP TO AROUND 7.3 PERCENT. THE BOARD WILL DECIDE ON THAT FIGURE AT TUESDAY'S MEETING AS WELL.

COMMISSIONERS ALSO DISCUSSED PAYING 12,000 DOLLARS TO REGION NINE TO WRITE A BROADBAND GRANT APPLICATION AND HEARD FROM FRONTIER COMMUNICATIONS ON THE PROPOSED 2.8 MILLION DOLLAR BROADBAND PROJECT. THE BOARD ALSO WILL TAKE OFFICIAL ACTION ON THOSE ITEMS AT THIS COMING TUESDAY'S REGULAR MEETING.
