THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD ON TUESDAY WAS UPDATED BY FAIR BOARD MEMBER CALVIN SAXTON ABOUT THE SITUATION REGARDING RACES FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON AT THE FAIR GROUNDS. HE SAID RIGHT NOW THE RACE PROGRAM IS WITHOUT A PROMOTER AND EFFORTS TO FIND ONE FOR THE UPCOMING SEASON HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL. MR SAXTON SAID THE FAIR BOARD HAS NO INTEREST IN OPERATING OR SUBSIDIZING THE RACE TRACK ADDING THEIR FOCUS IS TO CONTINUE TO MAKE THE FAIR THE BEST IT CAN BE. HE SAID THE AVERAGE FOR FANS ATTENDING RACES RACES HAS DROPPED FROM 1,100 TO 800 THE PAST FEW YEARS. BUT HE ADDED THAT THAT IS STILL 800 PEOPLE PATRONIZING FAIRMONT BUSINESSES BESIDES ATTENDING THE RACES. MR SAXTON SAID HE JUST WANTED TO INFORM THE COMMISSIONERS ABOUT THE SITUATION SO IF THEY WERE ASKED WHY THERE WERE NO RACES THIS SUMMER THEY WOULD KNOW THE REASON. HE SAID THE BOARD WOULD CONTINUE TO PURSUE A PROMOTER IN THE MEANTIME.

MR. SAXTON WAS ALSO PRESENT TO ASK THE COUNTY BOARDFOR SOME POSSIBLE HELP TO ASSIST DRAINAGE OF RAIN WATER COMING OFF OF THE MARTIN COUNTY ARENA BUILDING. SOME ROOF AND GUTTER REPAIR HAS TAKEN PLACE BUT THERE IS STILL A PROBLEM OF GETTING WATER TO DRAIN AWAY FROM THE BUILDING- A PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE THE PAVING OF THE ROAD AND PARKING LOT ON THE FAIRGROUNDS. MR. SAXTON ASKED THE BOARD FOR POSSIBLE HELP INSTALLING NEW TILE IN THAT AREA. THE BOARD POSTPONED ACTION UNTIL FURTHER DETAILS WERE OBTAINED ABOUT THE PROJECT.
