THE FAIRMONT CITY COUNCIL MONDAY DISCUSSED A CITY STAFF RECOMMENDATION TO OFFER TO PAY THE FIRST 2,500 DOLLARS TOWARD AN EFFORT THE REPAIR THE CLOCK IN THE CITIZENS PARK ON THE DOWNTOWN PLAZA. THE CLOCK WAS INSTALLED IN 2002 THANKS TO COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS AND A FAIRMONT FOUNDATION GRANT. THE CLOCK HAS NOT BEEN OPERABLE FOR SOMETIME AND CITY STAFF AND THE MAYOR HAD BEEN APPROACHED BY SEVERAL INDIVIDUALS ABOUT MAKING IT OPERATIONAL AGAIN. A COST ESTIMATE WAS GIVEN AT 5,950 DOLLARS THAT WOULD REVAMP THE ENTIRE TIME PIECE.

NEW CITY COUNCILORS TERRY ANDERSON AND CHAD ASKELAND SAID THE MONEY RAISED FOR THE PROJECT SHOULD COME FROM COMMUNITY DONATIONS AND NOT TAX PAYER DOLLARS. THE COUNCIL VOTED TO REVISIT THE CLOCK SITUATION IN 90 DAYS . IN THE MEANTIME DONATIONS FROM THE COMMUNITY ARE BEING ENCOURAGED.

CITY ADMINISTRATOR MIKE HUMPAL SAYS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY FOR THE REPAIR OF THE CITIZENS PARK CLOCK ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE AND CAN BE MADE AT CITY HALL.
