THE FAIRMONT CITY COUNCIL MONDAY APPROVED THE 2013 BUDGET AND TAX LEVY. THE LEVY WILL INCREASE BY 3 PER CENT FOR NEXT YEAR AT 93,620 DOLLARS WITH THE TOTAL LEVY AT 3,214,285 DOLLARS COMPARED TO LAST YEAR'S 3,120,665 DOLLARS.

CITY FINANCE DIRECTOR PAUL HOYE PRESENTED THE LEVY AND BUDGET FIGURES AT THE MEETING WHICH SHOW EXPENDITURES FOR NEXT YEAR OUTPACING REVENUE 20,886,396 DOLLARS TO 18,750,000 DOLLARS. MR. HOYE MENTIONED SOME REVENUE INCREASES FOR NEXT YEAR BEING IN CHARGES FOR SERVICES WHERE A 1.25 PER MONTH INCREASE WILL GO ON UTILITY BILLS TO PAY FOR CITY WIDE CLEANUP AND LEAF DUMP MAINTENANCE. IN SPECIAL REVENUE FUNDS LAKE RESTORATION HAS GONE UP FROM JUST 9,900 DOLLARS THIS YEAR TO 761,500 DOLLARS FOR NEXT YEAR. THE HIGHER AMOUNT WORK BEING DONE ON THE CHANNELS IN GOMSRUD PARK AND A WOODLAND AVENUE. OVER 9 MILLION DOLLARS IN IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS ARE SCHEDULED FOR NEXT YEAR INCLUDING THOSE CHANNELS,LAIR ROAD BRIDGE,AIRPORT IMPROVEMENTS ,PRAIRIE AVENUE RAILROAD CROSSING, AND STREET IMPROVEMENTS SCHEDULED FOR 6 BLOCKS ON ELM STREET. THOSE PROJECTS WILL MOSTLY BE COVERED BY FEDERAL,STATE,COUNTY GRANTS AND AIDS,DEBT SERVICE RESERVES,LAKE RESTORATION FUND, GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS ,LIQUOR STORE FUND AND GENERAL FUND.

THE COUNCIL ALONG WITH THE LEVY AND GENERAL FUND BUDGET APPROVED THE PROPRIETARY FUND BUDGETS FOR THE NEW YEAR. THAT INCLUDES PUBLIC UTILITIES WHERE THE WATER RATES FOR P U C CUSTOMERS WILL GO UP 12 PER CENT AND THE WASTE WATER RATES WILL GO UP 8 PER CENT. A PUBLIC HEARING FOR THOSE NEW RATES WILL BE CALLED FOR AT THE JANUARY 14 COUNCIL MEETING AND THE HEARING SET FOR THE JANUARY 28TH MEETING NEXT YEAR.
