FOCUS ON FAIRMONT , A GROUP OF CONCERNED CITIZENS, APPEARED BEFORE THE FAIRMONT CITY COUNCIL ON MONDAY NIGHT. THE GROUP BEGAN MEETING IN FEBRUARY TO DISCUSS THE BETERMENT OF FAIRMONT. ONE THEME THE GROUP WAS CONCERNED WITH WAS THE LACK OF RENTAL ORDINANCES IN THE CITY. THAT WAS THEIR REASON FOR APPROACHING THE COUNCIL AFTER THE GROUP HAD RESEARCHED THE SITUATION IN THE AREA AND FOUND THAT FAIRMONT WAS QUITE UNIQUE IN THAT WE DO NOT HAVE A FORMAL RENTAL CODE ON THE BOOKS.

COUNCILOR JOE KALLEMEYN THOUGHT NOW WAS THE TIME TO DO JUST THAT.

STEVE HAWKINS AND DARCI BENTZ WERE SPOKES PEOPLE FOR THE FOCUS ON FAIRMONT GROUP WHICH WAS OUT IN FULL FORCE IN THE COUNCIL CHAMBERS MONDAY NIGHT.

THEY SAID THE ADOPTION OF A RENTAL CODE WOULD PROVIDE BENEFITS INCUDING ;

INCREASE ACCOUNTIBILITY FOR LAND OWNERS AND TENANTS, CREATE GREATER TRANSPARENCY FOR CITY OFFICIALS AS FAR AS WHO RESIDES IN,OWNS AND MANAGES RENTAL HOUSING, TENANTS WOULD GAIN PROTECTION FROM UNHEALTHY LIVING CONDITIONS, THERE WOULD BE A STRUCTURE AND SYSTEMATIC APPROACH IN PLACE TO ADDRESS CONCERNS FROM NEIGHBORS,LAW ENFORCEMENT,AND LANDOWNERS/TENANTS RELATED TO RENTAL HOUSING.

AFTER THE PRESENTATION ALL THE COUNCIL MEMBERS APPROVED GIVING THE GO AHEAD TO CITY STAFF TO PREPARE SUCH AND ORDINANCE. THE MOTION WAS MADE TO MOVE ON THIS IMMEDIATELY BU COUNCILOR WES CLERC.

COUNCILOR CLERC, AND MAYOR RANDY QUIRING BOTH THANKED THE FOCUS ON FAIRMONT COMMITTEE FOR DOING THE LEG WORK ON THIS PROPOSAL AND CITY ADMINSTRATOR MIKE HUMPAL SAYS THE GRASSROOTS EFFORT ON THIS CERTAINLY EMPOWERS THE CITY STAFF TO PREPARE A DRAFT ORDINANCE ON RENTAL CODES.
