THE FAIRMONT AREA SCHOOL BOARD TUESDAY HEARD A REPORT FROM SUPT. JOE BROWN. HE SHARED WITH THE BOARD THAT THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SENT PEOPLE DOWN TO CONDUCT AN AUDIT OF THE DISTRICT'S M A R S PROGRAM AND THEY DETERMINED THAT FAIRMONT WAS UNDERCOUNTING STUDENTS AND WERE DUE UP TO AN ADDITIONAL $15,000 FROM THE STATE.

BOARD ACTION INCLUDED APPROVING A MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING BETWEEN THE DISTRICT AND EDUCATION MINNESOTA-FAIRMONT REGARDING A NON-PRECEDENT SETTING MODIFICATION HAVING TO DO WITH SICK LEAVE. A PAIR OF MEDICAL LEAVE REQUESTS WERE APPROVED AND DONATIONS WERE ACCEPTED INCLUDING A GIFT OF 1,098.87 FOR THE SCHOOL LUNCH ANGEL FUND FROM FIRST CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST OF FAIRMONT. PAUL RUKAVINA DONATED 1,200 DOLLARS TO THE SCHOOL DISTRICTS WELDING PROGRAM. JOE BROWN HAS A STORY BEHIND THAT PAUL TOOK AN ADULT WELDING CLASS AND PRESENTED INSTRUCTOR BOB BONIN WITH 12 - 100 DOLLAR BILLS TO GO TOWARD FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH STUDENTS FOR THEIR WELDING PROJECTS.

THE BOARD ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION OF JUDY BERKLAND AT THE END OF THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR. JUDY HAS SERVED AS FAIRMONT'S ORCHESTRA TEACHER SINCE 2005 AND HAS DONE AN OUTSTANDING JOB DEVELOPING AND GROWING THE PROGRAM ACCORDING TO SUPT. BROWN. THE BOARD THEN APPROVED HIRING HER REPLACEMENT, KATIE KOENNING, WHO WILL BE GRADUATING FROM LUTHER COLLEGE IN MAY THIS YEAR WITH A MAJOR IN MUSIC AND MINOR IN K-12 EDUCATION. ACCORDING TO HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL KIM NISS AS A 1OTH GRADER IN SCHOOL, KATIE PROVIDED VIOLIN LESSONS TO STUDENTS AND CO-FOUNDED A COMMUNITY SUMMER ORCHESTRA. SHE STUDENT TAUGHT IN THE TWIN CITIES AND IOWA AND HAS EXTENSIVE BACKGROUND WORKING WITH ELEMENTARY, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL MUSICIANS IN PRIVATE AND GROUP SETTINGS.
