FAIRMONT POLICE CHIEF MICHAEL HUNTER REPORTS ON AN OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING EARLY SATURDAY MORNING. THE REPORT STATES THAT TWO FAIRMONT POLICE OFFICERS WERE DISPATCHED TO A REPORT OF SOMEONE BEING THREATENED AT AN APARTMENT BUILDING IN FAIRMONT. UPON ARRIVAL THE OFFICERS MADE CONTACT WITH A 23 YEAR-OLD MALE WHO CONFRONTED OFFICERS WITH TWO KNIVES. DURING THE INCIDENT ONE OFFICER FIRED HIS DUTY WEAPON AND STRUCK THE SUSPECT. THE MALE SUSPECT WAS PRONOUNCED DECEASED AT THE SCENE.

ONE OFFICER WAS TRANSPORTED TO MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM -FAIRMONT AND WAS TREATED FOR MINOR INJURIES AND RELEASED. THE MINNESOTA BUREAU OF CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION (BCA) WAS REQUESTED TO CONDUCT THE INVESTIGATION OF THE INCIDENT. OFFICERS INVOLVED IN THE INCIDENT HAVE BEEN PLACED ON STANDARD ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE DURING THE INVESTIGATION.

FORMAL IDENTIFICATION OF THE DECEASED MALE WILL BE MADE BY RAMSEY COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER FOLLOWING AUTOPSY. FURTHER INFORMATION, INCLUDING THE NAMES OF OFFICERS, WILL BE RELEASED BY THE B C A ONCE THE INITIAL INTERVIEWS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED.
