THE FAIRMONT CITY COUNCIL HELD ITS TRUTH IN TAXATION HEARING MONDAY NIGHT AT THE REGULAR MEETING. TO BEGIN THE MEETING MIKE SHEPLEE, MARTIN COUNTY DEPUTY ASSESSOR, EXPLAINED THE MAILINGS THAT PROPERTY OWNERS RECEIVE FROM THE COUNTY EVERY YEAR. HE ENCOURAGED PROPERTY OWNERS TO CALL,STOP IN OR EMAIL THE ASSESSOR'S OFFICE WITH ANY ISSUES, QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ABOUT THEIR PROPERTY VALUATIONS.

THE CITY COUNCIL APPROVED A 12.1 PERCENT LEVY INCREASE TO GENERATE $488,000 IN ADDITIONAL TAX DOLLARS. THAT INCREASE WILL HAVE A PROPERTY TAX IMPACT OF A 10% INCREASE FOR 2018.

CITY FINANCE DIRECTOR PAUL HOYE MENTIONED VARIOUS FACTORS FOR THE INCREASED LEVY AMOUNT. INCLUDING LEVY FOR FIRE TRUCKS AND STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS, INCREASING THE HOUSING DEMO PROGRAM FUNDING, ADDING POSITIONS IN THE STREET DEPARTMENT, PLANNER CODE ENFORCEMENT AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, COST OF LIVING INCREASE OF 3% PLUS INCREASES IN HEALTH INSURANCE AND WORK COMP INSURANCE FOR EMPLOYEES AND ONE TIME CAPITAL PROJECTS FOR PARKS AND TRAILS. PUBLIC UTILITIES WILL BE INCREASING WATER RATES BY 3% WHILE ELECTRIC AND WASTEWATER RATES REMAIN THE SAME.

THE ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND, AN ACCESSIBLE PLAY AREA PROPOSED FOR GOMSRUD PARK, GOT A CONTRIBUTION OF $150,000 THROUGH LIQUOR STORE FUNDS. MEMBERS OF THE ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND TASK FORCE WERE ON HAND AT THE MEETING AND APPLAUDED THE COUNCIL WHEN THE MEETING WAS ADJOURNED AND THEN SHOOK HANDS WITH CITY STAFF, COUNCIL MEMBERS AND MAYOR TO THANK THEM FOR THE SUPPORT AS THE FUNDING FROM THE CITY PUT THEM OVER THE HALFWAY POINT OF FUNDRAISING SINCE THE PROJECT HAD SURPASSED 100,000 DOLLAR MARK LAST WEEK WITH CONTRIBUTIONS SO FAR TOWARD THE GOAL OF $450,000.
