The Minnesota Supreme Court announced a verdict in the court case between Governor Mark Dayton and the Minnesota Legislature. The Court overturned a Ramsey County District Court decision which found Gov. Dayton exceeded his authority by vetoing funding for the legislature. The Supreme Court’s decision effectively reinstates the governor’s veto.

Senator Julie Rosen (R-Vernon Center) issued the following statement:

“I am disheartened and disturbed by the Court’s decision. This is not about a political squabble between two parties; it’s about the legitimacy of the legislature. The Court’s ruling shows no respect for the independence of the legislature, and puts us in the terrible position of now having to borrow money from another government entity that has its own crucial functions to carry out. We don’t live in a dictatorship; we live in a republic where the people are guaranteed to three independent, co-equal branches of government. The ruling sets a dangerous precedent for all future budget talks by dramatically expanding the power of the executive branch.”
