THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD TUESDAY APPROVED A 5.84 PERCENT INCREASE IN THE PRELIMINARY 2018 TAX LEVY. THAT INCREASE AMOUNTS AN INCREASE OF 876,216 DOLLARS IN THE LEVY AMOUNT OF 15,868,136 DOLLARS. THIS AMOUNT CAN BE DECREASED BUT NOT INCREASED BEFORE THE FINAL BUDGET AND LEVY ARE APPROVED IN DECEMBER. JUST PRIOR TO THE APPROVAL THE BOARD DECIDED TO MOVE 315,000 DOLLARS WORTH OF WIND ENERGY TAX FUNDS TO THE C I P FUND FOR 2017 EXPENSES.

COMMISSIONERS APPROVED A MOTION TO INCLUDE FRAUD INVESTIGATOR EXPENSES IN THE HUMAN SERVICES BUDGET. THAT EXPENSE HAD BEEN IN THE GENERAL FUND IN THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE ALTHOUGH COUNTY STAFF DIDN'T KNOW WHY. THE FARIBAULT COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE HAS AN AGREEMENT WITH FARIBAULT-MARTIN COUNTY HUMAN SERVICES TO PERFORM THE SERVICE AND MARTIN COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGREED THAT THE HUMAN SERVICES SHOULD REIMBURSE THE FARIBAULT COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE.

THE BOARD VOTED 3-2 IN FAVOR OF REQUIRING ALL COUNTY EMPLOYEES TO HAVE MANDATORY DIRECT DEPOSIT FOR THEIR PAYCHECKS, BELIEVING THE MOVE WILL INCREASE EFFICIENCY IN COUNTY PAYROLL AND ACCOUNTING PRACTICES. COMMISSIONERS ELLIOTT BELGARD AND STEVE FLOHRS CAST THE DISSENTING VOTES ON THAT MOTION.

COUNTY ENGINEER KEVIN PEYMAN ADDRESSED THE BOARD ON THE UPDATES TO CERTAIN COUNTY PROJECTS. HE SAID THE ROAD WORK THROUGH NORTHROP HAD A DELAYED START DUE TO RAIN BUT EXPECTS WORK TO CONTINUE ON SCHEDULE. HE NOTED SOME EXCEPTIONS BUT THOUGHT THE TRANSITION TO AN ALL-WAY STOP AT COUNTY ROAD 26 AND STATE HIGHWAY 263 INTERSECTION IN WELCOME WAS GOING WELL. PEYMAN ALSO NOTED THAT TILING WORK AT THE FAIRGROUNDS IS PROGRESSING.
