MAN FACES FELONY CHARGE OF ASSAULTING A PEACE OFFICER IN MARTIN COUNTY. 49 YEAR-OLD ROBERT RAPHAEL SCHULTZ, WHOSE ADDRESS IS LISTED AS BEING WELLS, MINNESOTA ACCORDING TO THE CRIMINAL COMPLAINT, IS FACING A 4TH DEGREE ASSAULT - CAUSING DEMONSTRABLE BODILY HARM TO A MINNESOTA STATE PATROLMAN DURING A CALL TO HOUSE FIRE IN GRANADA LAST FRIDAY MORNING.

THE PATROLMAN HAD SEEN THE SMOKE FROM THE FIRE A FEW MILES AWAY AND ARRIVED ON THE SCENE AND FOUND TWO WITNESSES IN FRONT OF THE STRUCTURE WHO SAID A MAN WHO WAS NAKED AND APPEARED TO BE ON SOMETHING WAS AT THE BACK DOOR OF THE HOUSE BUT WOULDN'T COME OUT. THE PATROLMAN WENT BACK AND TRIED TO PERSUADE THE MAN, LATER IDENTIFIED AS SCHULTZ, TO COME AWAY FROM THE DOOR BUT HE WOULD NOT. THE OFFICER THEN PULLED HIM AWAY FROM THE HOUSE ABOUT 10 FEET BUT THEN SCHULTZ ALLEGEDLY STARTED SWINGING HIS FISTS AND EVENTUALLY WAS BRAWLING WITH HIM UNTIL HE FELL ON TOP OF THE OFFICER HINDERING HIS ATTEMPT TO PUT HANDCUFFS ON HIM.


ONE OF THE WITNESSES AND A GRANADA FIRST RESPONDER CAME TO THE AID OF THE OFFICER AND FREED HIM TO PUT THE CUFFS ON SCHULTZ. ROBERT RAFAEL SCHULTZ WAS TRANSPORTED FROM THE SCENE BY GOLD CROSS AMBULANCE AND LATER TRANSPORTED TO ST. MARY'S HOSPITAL IN ROCHESTER FOR TREATMENT FOR SMOKE INHALATION. THE PATROLMAN WAS TREATED AT THE MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM -FAIRMONT EMERGENCY ROOM FOR A NECK INJURY. HIS UNIFORM WAS REPORTED COVERED IN BLOOD AND MUD AFTER THE ALTERCATION.

ROBERT RAFAEL SCHULTZ IS FACING A MAXIMUM PENALTY OF 3 YEARS IMPRISONMENT/6,000 DOLLAR FINE IF CONVICTED FOR THE ASSAULT AND HAS PRIOR CONVICTIONS FOR FAILURE TO REGISTER AS A PREDATORY OFFENDER AND FLEEING A POLICE OFFICER IN A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCORDING TO THE POLICE REPORT.
