The Tarnished Brass is a seven-member brass ensemble that has been in existence for 50 years. Members are trumpets - Mark Olson (former USC band director), Mike Fuller (former Fairmont band director), and Barry Fox (retired Chaska band director); horn - Jim McCreary; trombone - Larry Vogel (of Fairmont); euphonium - Bob Waggoner; and tuba - Eric Peterson. In celebration of their golden anniversary, they have commissioned Thomas Root (graduate of the University of Minnesota and retired band director at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah) to compose a work for brass and voices. He created “My Soul Magnifies the Lord”, a setting of the Magnificat, which will have its premiere on Sunday morning, August 6, in Fairmont. It will be performed at the beginning of the 9:00 am service at the Fairmont United Methodist Church, and then be featured, along with other brass music, during the 9:30 am service at the First Congregational Church in Fairmont. Members of the vocal ensemble are: sopranos - Morgan Dickman, Kristin Johnson, DeeAnne Helfritz, and Paula Kabe; altos - Jolene Krussow, Shannon Dickman, and Lill Robinson; tenors - Mike Ellingsen and Brian Roverud; and basses - Kurt Steinke, Mark Frahm, and Paul Johnson. Directors will be Thomas Root and Nick VanDuzee.

The Tarnished Brass will extend their day by playing from a pontoon on the Fairmont lakes. The projected schedule is:
Noon - Marina Lodge
1:30 pm - Sylvania Park
2:00 pm - Ward Park
2:40 pm - Gomsrud Park
3:00 pm - Channel Inn
The public is invited to any or all of these performances.
