THE FAIRMONT CITY COUNCIL DISCUSSED THE POSSIBILITY OF HAVING THE MUNIPAL LIQUOR STORE OPENING ON SUNDAY'S WHEN THE NEW LAW ALLOWING THAT IN THE STATE TAKES IN EFFECT ON JULY 1ST. CITY ADMINISTRATOR MIKE HUMPAL ALONG WITH FAIRMONT MUNICIPAL LIQUOR MANAGER TOM DONNELLY CITY FINANCE DIRECTOR PAUL HOYE HAVE COME OUT AS SAYING EARLIER THAT KEEPING THE LIQUOR STORE OPEN SUNDAY'S WOULD NOT BE ECOMICALLY OF PROFITABLE OR FEASIBLE.

HUMPAL SAID HE DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD INCREASE CUSTOMER TRAFFIC AND WOULD JUST BE AN EXTENSION OF SATURDAY SALES.

MR DONNELLY SAID HE WOULD HAVE TO HIRE TWO MORE PART TIME PEOPLE BECAUSE CURRENT STAFF IS MAXED OUT IN PARTTIME HOURS AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO INCENTIVISE THE SUNDAY SHIFT TO GET SOMEBODY WHO WANTS TO WORK IT. HE ALSO SAID HE WOULDN'T WANT BE THE GUINEA PIG IN THIS NEW VENTURE AND WE SHOULD LET SOME AREA COMMUNITIES WHO ARE GOING TO DO IT ON A TRIAL BASIS AND THEN CHECK WITH THEM ON ON IF IT'S WORTHWHILE OR NOT. HE SAYS ABOUT 9 OUT OF 10 PEOPLE HE HAS TALKED TO SAY IT SHOULD STAY CLOSED ON SUNDAY'S. COUNCILORS BRUCE PETERS AND RUTH CYPHERS SAY THEY HAVE HEARD FROM SOME PEOPLE THAT THEY THINK IT SHOULD BE OPEN AND TOM HAWKINS AID THE CITY SHOULD SEEK INPUT FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS BEFORE MAKING A DECISION. MAYOR DEB FOSTER AGREED ENCOURAGING THOSE WITH AN OPINION ON THIS TO CONTACT CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS, MIKE HUMPAL OR TOM DONNELLY.

THE COUNCIL APPROVED AN AGREEMENT WITH MN DOT PROVIDING PAYMENT FOR USE OF BLUE EARTH AVENUE AND LAKE AVENUE AS DETOUR ROUTES DURING UPCMONG CONSTRUCTION WORK ON I-90 OFF AND ON RAMPS ON HIGHWAY 15 AND COUNTY ROAD 39. THE STATE WILL PROVIDE 5,820 DOLLARS TO COVER THE COST OF MAINTENCE AND ROAD LIFE CONSUMED.
