MARTIN COUNTY HIGHWAY ENGINEER KEVIN PEYMAN IN HIS UPDATE TO THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD TUESDAY INFORMED THEM THAT AT LONG LAST THE MINNESOTA LEGISLATURE AUTHORIZED AND THE GOVERNOR SIGNED THE ALLOTMENT OF FEDERAL MONEY TO SEVERAL ROAD PROJECTS ACROSS THE STATE. THAT INCLUDED FUNDS FOR THE HIGHWAY 15 RECONSTRUCTION THROUGH THE CITY OF FAIRMONT. PEYMAN SAID BID LETTING FOR THE PROJECT IS ON APRIL 28TH.

PEYMAN IS HOPEFUL NOW THAT THE FUNDS HAVE BEEN AUTHORIZED THAT PROJECT WILL BE MOSTLY DONE THIS YEAR. THERE HAD BEEN CONCERNS DUE TO THE LACK OF AUTHORIZATION FOR THE FUNDING THAT THE PROJECT MIGHT NOT START THIS YEAR OR BE DRAGGED OUT OVER TWO YEARS. THE PROJECT STRETCHES THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF HIGHWAY 15 FROM WALMART TO MAYO CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM AND FAIRMONT JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL AND WILL INCLUDE RESURFACING, UPDATING SIDEWALKS, CURB AND GUTTER AND TRAFFIC SIGNALS AT A COST OF 6 MILLION DOLLARS.

THE BOARD APPROVED AND RATIFIED A GRANT APPLICATION TO SUPPLEMENT 50 PER CENT OF THE COSTS RELATING TO A COURTHOUSE SECURITY ASSESSMENT PROJECT,INCLUDING TRAINING,METAL DETECTORS AND SOME LOCKERS ACCORDING TO SHERIFF JEFF MARKQUART.

COMMISSIONERS APPROVED AN AGREEMENT FOR THE CONTINUATION OF THE SENTENCING TO SERVE PROGRAM IN MARTIN COUNTY AT A TOTAL COST OVER TWO YEARS OF 263,191 DOLLARS-AN INCREASE OF 6 PERCENT EACH OF THE NEXT TWO YEARS. THAT COST IS THE COUNTY SHARE OF PROVIDING TWO CREW LEADERS AND PLACING WORK CREWS INTO SERVICE.

THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD ALSO APPROVED THE SUMMER YOUTH WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM AGREEMENT BETWEEN MARTIN COUNTY AND THE MINNESOTA VALLEY ACTION COUNCIL PROVIDING AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR YOUTH RESIDING IN MARTIN COUNTY WITH COMPENSATION TO WORKERS IN THE PROGRAM AT 10 DOLLARS PER HOUR. THE BUDGETED COST TO THE COUNTY IS 50,000 DOLLARS ANNUALLY.
