THE MARTIN COUNTY BOARD AT TUESDAY'S MEETING HEARD FROM MEMBERS OF THE MARTIN COUNTY FAIR BOARD. THEY WERE BACK IN FRONT OF THE COMMISSIONERS WITH ANOTHER PLAN TO ADDRESS A DRAINAGE ISSUE THAT HAS CONFRONTED THE FAIRGROUNDS FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW-DRAINAGE OF RAIN OF THE ROOF OF MARTIN COUNTY ARENA- THAT FINDS ITS WAY INTO THE BUILDING. SEVERAL REMEDIES HAVE BEEN TRIED BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTS.

THE LATEST PROPOSAL FROM THE FAIR BOARD IS TO RUN A WATER MAIN FROM THE ARENA BUILDING ALL THE WAY TO THE CREEK WITH TILING GOING ALONG THE WEST AND NORTH SIDES OF THE BUILDING AND DRAINAGE GRATES IN FRONT OF THE MAIN ENTRANCE AND FAIR BOARD OFFICE - WITH RUN OFF THROUGH TILE TO THE MAIN.

CALVIN SAXTON - SPOKESPERSON FOR THE FAIR BOARD - WAS SEEKING SOME HELP FROM COUNTY AS FAR AS LABOR TO REMOVE ASPHALT FROM THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE ARENA TO INSTALL DRAINAGE MATERIAL AS WELL AS REPLACING WITH BITUMINOUS WHEN THE PROJECT IS FINISHED. COUNTY ENGINEER KEVIN PEYMAN SAID THE LABOR WOULD BE NO PROBLEM BUT THE COST OF MATERIALS WOULD BE THE QUESTION. COMMISSIONERS BY CONSENSUS APPROVED ASSISTING THE FAIR BOARD AND AND WANTED TO LOOK AT THE SITUATION FURTHER IN A WORK SESSION IN THE NEAR FUTURE.

CALVIN SAXTON SAID THEY HAD HOPED TO GET THE WATER MAIN TO THE CREEK PUT IN BEFORE THE FAIR AND START THE REST OF THE PROJECT AFTER THE FAIR THIS YEAR. TOTAL COST ESTIMATE IS 50,000 DOLLARS FOR THE PROJECT WITH THE CITY OF FAIRMONT COVERING HALF OF THAT AND THE FAIR BOARD RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OTHER 25,000.
